He said., ” I received the news that the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, with great joy.

“Senator Saraki’s ordeal at the hand of the All Progressives Congress is all too familiar to lovers of democracy in Nigeria and around the world. Leaving a party which maliciously prosecuted him and subjected him to the most degrading treatment, notwithstanding his status as the nation’s number three citizen, took courage, and I commend him.

“What the APC did to Senator Saraki is what they have also done to Nigeria as a nation. They have degraded our democracy and our economy.

“Bukola Saraki is a product of the Peoples Democratic Party, under whose banner her became a Presidential Adviser, Governor and Senator. The PDP’s ideology and political philosophy is conducive to Senator Saraki’s political leaning.

“I therefore not only welcome Senator Saraki’s resignation from the APC, I also urge him to go one step further and join the only party capable of enshrining genuine democracy in Nigeria as well as lasting economic progress. I urge Senator Saraki to join our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party.

“May God bless Nigeria and may God bless the PDP.”

Timi Frank Exposes Fresh Plot To Arrest Saraki in New Press Release

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has raised an alarm over a fresh plot to arrest the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on the orders of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris in connivance with the presidency.

Frank in a statement in Abuja said he has reliable information that the IGP has ordered operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) to raid Saraki’s residence any moment from this night and effect his arrest.

He described the plot as an act of desperation and utter wickedness by the IGP who is overly eager to redeem his image following the failure of the police to prevent Saraki from attending the sitting of the Senate on Tuesday where 15 APC lawmakers defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Frank said that the Presidency is equally anxious to get back at Saraki over the defections and therefore has mandated the IGP to ensure his arrest and detention simply to embarrass him.

“Recall that the police on Tuesday morning said:-

siege on the residence of the President of the Senate and that of his deputy in a bid to arrest and prevent them from attending plenary. Saraki was able to escape and presided over the Senate.

“Following the development the presidency summoned the IGP and after berating him for failing to gag Saraki, gave him a fresh ultimatum to arrest Saraki using every power at his disposal.

“This act of desperation by the IGP, backed by the presidency against Saraki is condemnable as it has no place in democracy.

“I hereby call on all Nigerias and members of the international community to rise in unison to condemn this act of tyranny and barbarity being perpetrated against the President of the Senate by the present administration using the police.

“As you read this statement the SARS may already be storming the residence of the President of the Senate and I want to call on

Nigerians to hold the IGP and the presidency responsible should any harm befall him following the plot to invade his residence in the dead of the night,” Frank said.

He added that Saraki is a respectable and responsible leader who cannot hurt a fly, saying all efforts being made by this administration through the police to tie the Offa Robbery allegations on him will once again collapse like the CCT trial.

“They are only out to victimize Saraki for being the only responsible voice in this administration. They know that their allegations cannot withstand legal scrutiny, therefore they want to intimidate, embarrass, arrest and treat him like a common criminal.

“But I am rest assured that their present satanic plot against Saraki shall be frustrated by God who has been standing by him in the last three years,” he said.

He called on Nigerians to pray for Saraki as he faces this monumental trial once again.

Mass Defection: Wike Explains What Movement Of Lawmakers Will Do To Political Parties

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has said that the defection of over 50 Federal Lawmakers from the APC to the PDP will teach Political parties to respect their members.

Wike noted that democracy, rule of law and separation of powers had suffered extremely, insisting that the gale of defection since Tuesday was instructive to parties.

The Governor said that the mass defection in the National Assembly was also an indication that the will of the people and the liberty of any person to choose the political parties that he wanted to belong remained supreme.

Wike said this on Wednesday through the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Emma Okah.

“The institutions of democracy, rule of law, separation of powers, etc, have suffered enormously for some time now.

“The development yesterday, wherein people feel that time has come for them to move is very instructive.

“The people’s will must prevail and those who lead must lead with the understanding and appreciation of the fact that the people’s will is supreme.

“So, to all intent and purposes, the liberty of the persons to choose which party they want to belong without fear or favour was put to play.

“For whatever it is worth, political parties will now be a lot more careful on how they treat their members,” he stated.

Fayemi Blasts Fayose Again – Ekiti Situation Has Worsened In The Past Four Years

Ekiti State Governor-elect Kayode Fayemi has said he is ready to tackle the challenges confronting the state.

He said the fiscal, economic and social conditions of the state had worsened in the last four years.

The governor-elect sought the cooperation of residents to get the state out of the woods.

Fayemi advised the outgoing Ayo Fayose administration to use 80 per cent of allocations expected from the Federation Account to pay the backlog of salary owed workers before the October 16 handover.

The governor-elect spoke yesterday at the inauguration of the 32-member Transition Committee to facilitate the smooth transfer of power.

The committee has Senator Olu Adetunmbi as chairman. A retired Permanent Secretary, Mr. Deji Ajayi, is the secretary.

Fayemi stressed the recommendations of the committee would be far-reaching and serve as template to tackle challenges confronting Ekiti.

The governor-elect expressed dismay that the state had retrogressed in the last four years.

He said: “Our situation has become worse since we left government. It seems as if we are starting from the scratch. We must hit the ground running when we are sworn in on October 16.

“We need to ameliorate the unfortunate situation our people have been put into. We have no reason to disappoint our people.

“The debt profile is one of the areas the committee will look into. The Debt Management Office, I suspect, has given us underestimation (on the debt profile). There is no reason the outgoing administration should not cooperate with the transition committee.

“I really like to appeal to the outgoing administration to prioritise salary payment to civil servants and pensioners. The important thing now is: whatever that is coming to the state, 80 per cent of it should go into payment of salary arrears. To me, that should be a priority.

“Let me say this: neither my deputy governor-elect, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, nor myself consider ourselves as having repository of knowledge or have answers to all Ekiti’s problems. So, we are relying on your wealth of experiences.

“In your report, tell us those things we should not lay our hands on at all. Also endeavour to indicate those things we can do to have immediate impact on our people when we assume office. That is the most important thing to the incoming government.

“If you look at the configuration of this committee, we have more financial experts with deep knowledge of fiscal issues. There are four former commissioners, because finance is the main thing in Ekiti on the premise that our situations have worsened than we left it in October 2014.

“Our people are in a serious mess. Poverty has risen and we have to move fast and ameliorate their sufferings.

“I want to appeal to the present government, particularly Ekiti State workers, to cooperate with the committee in the spirit of patriotism. They should think more about Ekiti interest than that of any individual.

“I see no reason why Fayose’s government would not want to cooperate with you because this was what we did in 2014 and which the whole Nigeria commended.”

Adetunmbi said the team was aware of the huge task before it and craved the cooperation of the outgoing administration.

He said: “We want to assure the good citizens of Ekiti State that we are not going to act as enemies or adversaries. We are going to be friendly and that we shall do for the benefit of our state.

“We are coming as friends, not as enemies. We expect maximum cooperation from them so that the new government can start without any hiccup.”

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is said to have masterminded the siege to the homes of Bukola Saraki, Senate President and Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President on Tuesday.

A key member of the Reformed APC (R-APC), who spoke with our correspondent on Wednesday, said Oshiomhole in his bid to facilitate the impeachment of Saraki and Ekweremadu and prevent a possible defection of lawmakers from the APC used his influence as the national chairman of the party to order the police to barricade Saraki and Ekweremadu’s homes in order to prevent them from getting to the National Assembly.

He, however, said Saraki who has some informants in the police got wind of the plot a day before (Monday) and he, alongside some key PDP leaders, which include a prominent governor from the South-South perfected plans for him not to sleep in his Lake Chad junction, Maitama residence and also assisted him in gaining entrance to the National Assembly on Tuesday, thus thwarting the impeachment plot.

“I am a key member of R-APC and I know what is going on. Oshiomhole, the disputed national chairman of APC masterminded the plot. I am very sure President Buhari is not even aware of the development.

“Having failed in his bid to persuade the warring senators to sheathe their sword, Oshiomhole, in his characteristic combative manner as a former labour leader used his influence to get the security agents to mastermind the siege to the homes of Saraki and Ekweremadu. I wonder why the police is denying that no siege ever took place even when it is recorded and shown live on national television.

But for some key informants who revealed the plot to Saraki, he would have been impeached by now”, he said.

Already, the Nigeria Police Force has denied sending a detachment of its men to the residence of Bukola Saraki, the Senate President.

A detachment of security operatives had blocked Saraki’s convoy at his Apo residence with a view to preventing it from leaving the house. But he then announced that the residence of Ike Ekweremadu, his deputy, had also been besieged by men of the police and Department of State Services (DSS).

The police also denied its officers cordoned off the resident of the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu in an attempt to arrest him.

In a statement on Tuesday, police spokesman, acting DCP Jimoh Moshood, also insisted that “the force wishes to categorically state that there was no authorised deployment of police personnel to besiege the residence of the Senate President or his deputy as reported in the media.

UPDATE!!! PDP Rebranding, Set To Change Name

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to change its name, a rebranding measure ahead of 2019 general election.

ThisDay reported that the party had suffered a string of losses in the last four governorship elections – Edo, Ondo, Anambra and Ekiti.

The newspaper reported that the decision of the party for a change of name was taken on Saturday night.

Defection!! PDP Gives Saraki, Dogara, Tambuwal, Kwankwaso, Others 2-Week Deadline

The party noted that the move was pre-emptive to prevent the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from tagging it as corrupt.

PDP, which planned to announce the decision to change its name, had also pencilled down Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu as the one to head a committee that would walk the party through the procedure.

Many of the party’s stalwarts have been worried by how the ruling APC had successfully branded the party as corrupt in the eyes of Nigerians and admitted that, a rebranding was imperative to mount a successful challenge in 2019.

PDP had become damaged goods that must be changed to give the party a fresh start. The decision by the PDP to change its name might have stemmed from last Thursday’s meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and Senate President Bukola Saraki. Though, details of their discussion were not made public, many in PDP believed that with such sessions, the chances of bringing Saraki back to the PDP could be hampered.

The opposition party had long mooted the idea of name change, but had slowed down on the decision because a majority of its members were not disposed to it, and those who wanted it could not convince the others.

Besides, it was thought that even though the party had switched positions and had become an opposition party, PDP was still the only party with membership in the remotest parts of the country, and the name resonated with a majority of its members and admirers, particularly among the teeming illiterate populations.

Defection!! PDP Gives Saraki, Dogara, Tambuwal, Kwankwaso, Others 2-Week Deadline

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seems to be in a hurry to get its deal with members of the Reformed -All Progressives Congress (R-APC) done and sealed.

The two sides have been locked in intense talks and negotiations over the last few weeks for the aggrieved members of the APC to switch camps ahead of next year’s elections.

But President Muhammadu Buhari and the new national chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, have also launched peace talks of their own to persuade such APC members to reconsider their plan to dump the party.

With no defection of note happening as expected by the PDP, the party has given Senate President Bukola Saraki, House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara and others a two-week deadline to make up their minds and rejoin it.

Also being wooed by the PDP are: Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto); Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara); Governor Samuel Ortom (Benue); ex-Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, many Senators and members of the House of Representatives mostly in the Reformed-All Progressives Congress(R-APC) and other willing defectors.

The Nation gathered that the Senate President who met with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday, has summoned an emergency meeting of his associates, loyalists and strategists to take a final decision on whether or not to defect.

The meeting, which may hold anytime this week with tomorrow said to be the target date, if all those concerned could make it to Abuja.

It was learnt that Saraki has been in Lagos and Ilorin on whistle stops over the last few days for last minute consultations with his allies.

Sources told The Nation that a committee empanelled by Saraki has recommended that defection is “appropriate and popular” among his loyalists.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the two-week deadline was conveyed to Saraki in Ilorin by Governor Nyesom Wike on Wednesday during a closed-door session that took place after the Fidau for Hajiya Aishat Baraje, mother of a former National Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Kawu Baraje.

Baraje, who was also chairman of the New PDP (nPDP), is one of the key promoters of R-APC.

A top source familiar with the development said: “there is no doubt that the PDP delegation came for the Fidau and to mount pressure on Saraki to hasten action on the proposal to accommodate likely defectors from APC to PDP.

“Wike, who led the team, asked Saraki to wrap up decision on the defection within the next one week or two weeks in order to enable PDP adjust its structures ahead of primaries for various elective posts in 2019.

“Do not forget that the defection might alter the party structure at the state level and the power-sharing formula. The PDP has clearly stated that it will give equal rights and a sense of belonging to all defectors.

“This deadline applies to Saraki, Dogara, Tambuwal, Kwankwaso, other governors, Senators, members of the House of Representatives, Speakers and members of the State Houses of Assembly; and other party chieftains.

“The conduct of primaries by all parties is expected to begin on August 18. Any serious defector, technically, has less than three weeks to do so in order to be able to integrate with the structure of the party.

“And the National Assembly will soon go on break to enable the lawmakers participate in the primaries.”

Responding to a question, the source said: “I think Wike, who is a key facilitator in strengthening PDP ahead of 2019 poll, is working on a deadline to prevent undue pressure on the APC bigwigs which might make them change their decision.”

President Buhari has said that the political future of Igbos in Nigeria depends on his re-election in 2019.

The president stated this at the Southeast mega rally at Dan Anyiam Stadium in Imo State, organized by Governor Rochas Okorocha yesterday July 3rd.

Represented by the Secretary to the Federal Government of the Federation, SGF, Boss Mustapha, President Buhari said;

“The people of the South East are part of Nigeria and they have the right to make claim where the need arises and we will all support them. “The Igbo are not good starters. But whenever they start, they can catch it.

Let me say this, 2019 is an election that will make or mar the chances of Igbo in Nigeria. I want Igbo to make a paradigm shift. “We have to know that the position of the presidency is negotiable.

You can argue it from the point of strength and not from the point of weakness. 2019 will determine the future of this country. Let me say this, there are 18 Christians and 18 Muslims in Buhari’s cabinet. Even the Vice President is a Christian. I see a whole lot of people coming out to be president. Let me tell them Nigeria is not a Banana republic”.

One of the masters of ceremonies at the convention reportedly announced that delegates should no longer chorus ‘Change’ anytime the name of the party is chanted.

He said:-

“I want to announce that when shout APC, the appropriate response should now be Progress and not Change”.

Tinubu said many people were against the formation of the APC and did all they could to stop the merger.

He alleged that the doubters forged different tactics to prevent the APC’s formation.

Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to declared the presumed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief MKO Abiola, former president.

Aregbesola said this while receiving officials of the African Development Bank, who paid a courtesy call on him at the Government House on Tuesday.

The governor commended President Muhammadu Buhari for revalidation of the historic event, saying the injustice done 25 years ago by the Babangida-led junta was now being addressed by another General, although a retired one.

He said Nigerians shunned religious and ethnic biases and voted massively for Abiola and his running mate, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, who were both Muslims, stressing that the event was a watershed in the political history of Nigeria.

Aregbesola said he had kept faith with June 12 adding that his administration had been recognising June 12 as the real Democracy Day since he assumed office.

The governor said, “We believe he must be declared the President and recognised as such with all rights and privileges accorded to him. But he has been recognised as a recipient of yet to be fully declared mandate through a posthumous national honour, the highest national honour reserved only for Presidents.”

Declare December 31 Democracy Destruction Day To Celebrate Your 1983 Coup – Senator Abaribe Tells Buhari

A senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia-PDP), has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to declare December 31 as Democracy Destruction Day to mark the coup he led to end Nigeria’s Second Republic in 1983.

Mr. Abaribe made this contribution to the dissent of All Progressives Congress senators on Thursday.

Then a Major-General, Mr. Buhari on December 31, 1983, led by a group of senior army officers to overthrow the democratically elected government of President Shehu Shagari. He was appointed Head of State by the conspirators.

Now a democratically elected president, Mr. Buhari on June 6 directed that effective 2019, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, marked every May 29 for the past 18 years, be shifted to June 12 to honor Moshood Abiola, the winner of the 1993 presidential election.

Mr. Abiola was never sworn in as president. He was instead detained by the military and died in prison five years later.

Mr. Abaribe said December 31, 1983, is significant enough to mark the day democracy was destroyed in Nigeria. He urged the president to declare the date just as he did June 12.

First, he joined his colleagues in commending Mr. Buhari on the move.

“I support what Senator Olujimi and also what the Deputy Senate President had said, insisting that there may have to be an amendment of the constitution.

“I also want to add that it would also be necessary for the Executive to quickly bring to the National Assembly, an amendment to the Honours Act which states that there cannot be the posthumous award.

Now that they have jumped the gun to do posthumous award, it would be necessary for us to quickly amend that act.

“Finally, I want to also propose another day since we are now moving in the right direction, saying that democracy is needed, I want to propose that we also designate 31st December as Democracy Destruction Day because that was the day that this same president did a coup.”
